As I round the corner on twenty years with The Recording Academy , I am delighted to see a pair of old familiar aces, Kris Kristofferson ( The Cedar Creek Sessions) and Willie Nelson (Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin), joining a powerful list of new talent on this year’s final GRAMMY ballot. With only half of The Highwaymen currently able to grace the stage, my sincere hope is that these fine gentlemen are recognized once more.
The songs they write have meant so much to me since I was old enough to understand the lyrics and their music careers are simply the stuff of legends. I met Kris and his then very pregnant wife, Lisa, in the mid-eighties during a USO tour in Japan. As he walked through his “hits” for a packed house, I realized just how much talent it must take to earn “legend” status. As a fan of Willie since the mid-seventies, I have been to dozens of live shows across America but I met him only once at a State Fair gig one hot summer in Pueblo, Colorado, (or as I call it , “Hell with a Marriott) many years ago. Their combined accomplishments are unprecedented and I can think of no better Grammy milestone than to see each of them add one more award to their collections.
I am sworn to secrecy about my voting choices but the GRAMMY voting process is rather straightforward. Every year I look forward to seeing how in or out of tune I am about the current music industry and I enjoy comparing how many of my final choices actually garnered a Golden Gramophone.
Kris Kristofferson & Sheryl Crow – “The Loving Gift”
Willie Nelson – Summertime
But Before I Go Any Further ……The Highwaymen…….
And RIP Guy Clark – One of My Favorites Here:
As for the CBS GRAMMY Telecast on February 12th, James Corden will add a few new dimensions as this year’s host and aside from a rather somber “In Memoriam” segment, expect great musical moments and a bit more laughter in between. Who are your GRAMMY favorites this year? What are your thoughts on GRAMMY, AMA, CMA, Billboard and other Music Awards Programs?
